This qualification aims to build pharmacists’ skills and abilities in the management of themselves, their workers and the business requirements in which they are employed. Successful completion provides a nationally recognised qualification.
Whilst the course is tailored to the pharmacy setting, the skills can be applied to any management role. The diploma is an excellent stepping stone into management, or a formalisation of the skills acquired during work experience.
The course also teaches pharmacists how to:
- manage business information and retain corporate knowledge
- develop and implement the integration of innovation across the pharmacy
- develop clear policies and procedures that protect your staff and ensure that risk is managed within your pharmacy
- encourage high performance through the use of performance indicators and regular effective feedback
- market the pharmacy and its product range in a rapidly changing environment.
Benefits for the pharmacy
When 30 pharmacists (community pharmacy owners and managers) were interviewed throughout Australia, they expressed similar management issues when attempting to integrate new ideas into their practice:
- dealing with external pressures to initiate new ideas in their pharmacies
- responding to competitive pressures, and
- developing cohesive business models to support innovation in their professional and strategic approach.
Upon the completion of the Diploma of Management, participants can apply for credit with the Chifley Business School Master of Business Administration subject to meeting entry requirements.

Although I had owned and managed a pharmacy for many years, I found this course to be invaluable and one of the best training investments I have made … In fact, three of our staff members attended the course the following year.
