Depression QUM kit

Clinical depression is a serious illness that is often misunderstood, poorly recognised and inadequately treated.

Pharmacists are perfectly located to offer QUM services to community groups and aged care facilities in the area of pain management.

The QUM kit on depression contains resources to assist pharmacists in providing independent, evidence-based and accurate education on medicines and depression to residential care nurses, carers and consumers in the community. It aims to promote quality use of medicines to improve the quality of life of patients experiencing clinical depression.

The kit has two ready-made sets of slides and trainer’s manuals which pharmacists can use to prepare and deliver presentations to nursing staff or to consumers in the community.  The kit also contains a copy of Essential CPE: Depression in Older Adults, beyondBlue brochures and self care fact cards.

Benefits for presenting pharmacists and participants

Group 1 CPD credits (allocated at 1 credit point per hour) can be gained for any time spent engaged in learning when preparing to deliver the presentation.

Delivery of the presentation converts these previously gained Group 1 credits to Group 2 credits (allocated at 2 credits per hour). There are no credits allocated for the time spent presenting. Presenting qualifies as demonstration of knowledge as defined in the reference card below.

The learning objectives are to:

  • analyse the risks and benefits asssociated with the use of antidepressants and other therapies for depression, particularly in older persons
  • summarise the risk facors for depression
  • examine different non-drug strategies for managing depression
  • prepare to deliver a presentation on depression using provided materials as a basis for self-directed education
