Society Honours Young Tasmanian Pharmacist

PSA National President Brian Grogan announced Tasmania’s Shane Jackson as 2005 Young Pharmacist of the Year at the Official Opening of Pharmacy Australia Congress, the national conference for pharmacists, held 29 to 31 October in Melbourne.

Shane is recognised both nationally and internationally for his expertise in evidence-based practice and his success in building collaborative relationship with health care providers, for the benefit of the community. He has been a recipient of a National Institute of Clinical Studies (NICS) Fellowship since 2004.
In accepting the award Shane emphasised the importance of mentors in his development as a pharmacist, and paid tribute to those who have guided him, particularly Professor Greg Peterson at the Tasmanian School of Pharmacy.
Some of Shane’s achievements include:
- Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice, Tasmanian School of Pharmacy, University of Tasmania
- Published 28 papers and articles based on his pharmacy practice research
- Presented at conferences around Australia and in the United States
- Bought and reopened a rural community pharmacy at Nubeena on the Tasman Peninsula, providing much needed health and pharmacy services
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pharmacy Practice
- Completed more than 2,000 medication management reviews with nursing home residents since 2003
- PSA Tasmanian Branch Councillor
- Needle Availability Program (NAP) trainer for pharmacists and pharmacy assistants (Tasmania)
- Accredited methadone dispensing pharmacist
- Has been awarded six scholarships and grants, including an International Pharmaceutical Federation Travel Scholarship and an inaugural National Institute of Clinical Studies Fellowship
- Pharmacy Guild Branch Councillor
- Author, PSA Essential CPE booklet, Antithrombotics
- Regular contributor to Australian Pharmacist
- Chair, PSA Tasmanian Branch Professional Development Committee
The award is supported by one of Australia’s leading pharmaceutical companies, Mayne. David Cranwell, Group General Manager of Mayne’s Pharmacy division said, 'Shane is an outstanding example of how much a young pharmacist can contribute to our industry and he a very deserving winner'”
As well as the significant prestige associated with this award, Shane also receives a Sliver medal struck by the Royal Australian Mint, and the $10,000 Mayne Education Grant which will support Shane’s participation at a pharmacy-specific education event such as an international conference or course to a maximum value of $10,000.
