Pharmacy presentations (QUM kits)
Quality use of medicines is one of the central objectives of Australia’s national medicines policy, and improves health outcomes by promoting promote safe and effective use of appropriately chosen medicines.
Pharmacists have a particularly important role to play in promoting QUM in aged care facilities through medication management review and QUM services, good communication with residents, collaboration with relevant health care professionals, and the development and implementation of models of best practice.
Education activities may include the provision of in-service sessions for nursing staff, carers or residents of medication therapy, disease state management or prescribing trend issues.
Any registered pharmacist may provide QUM services in aged care facilities, and funding is available for those doing so.
The PSA can provide:
- Presentations for members providing QUM services
- Training presentations for pharmacy staff
- Presentations for community groups.
Earning CPD credits
Group 1 CPD credits (allocated at 1 credit point per hour) can be gained for any time spent engaged in learning when preparing to deliver the presentation.
Delivery of the presentation converts these previously gained Group 1 credits to Group 2 credits (allocated at 2 credits per hour).
There are no credits allocated for the time spent presenting, which qualifies as demonstration of knowledge as defined in the reference card.
