For your diary
By now everyone should know that PAC 2008 is being held in Perth this year, from 24th to 26th October, at the Perth Exhibition and Convention Centre.
The theme is: Inspiration - Innovation and Motivation
For those with just the briefest interest in the History of Pharmacy, the Academy is contributing to the programme with a special history session with speakers addressing the question of how medicines and drugs would have been used if the early French explorers to the western side of the Great South Land, had bothered to plant their flag and claim Western Australia for the Emperor two hundred years ago.
The vast coastline of Western Australia is studded with French names and the stories of the fierce maritime rivalry between Britain and France make fascinating reading.
So, at PAC in Perth you will not only refresh your scientific and business minds, but you will go home with a
new found knowledge of the history of our great country and perhaps an answer or two as to why we were almost French like Quebec and Montreal in Canada.
Make a note right now, to come to “A French Australia? Almost!”
The keynote speaker is Dr.Noelene Bloomfield, from the School of French Studies at U.W.A, supported by Mr.Kim Trouchet,
a descendent of an early WA pharmacist and entrepreneur, Alex Trouchet.
Cricket History
By David Wells, Kyneton
In keeping with the events of a national cricket carnival held in January 2008, this picture taken in 1936 shows the Victorian Chemists Cricket team which had just defeat- ed the New South Wales team at an interstate match played at the old South Melbourne Cricket and VFL Football ground.
The picture was sent in by David Wells (back row, third from the left) who was only 19 at the time, but is now 91 years of age.
