At the October 2008 Pharmacy Australia Congress in Perth, a special pharmacy history session was held with a French theme to highlight the questions:
“Why didn’t the French establish a colony in Australia?”
and
“What would life have been like if we had become a French colony in the west, as happened in Canada?”
One legacy we do have are the 416 French names left on the Australian coastline, the majority being on the south and western shores.
These names form a fascinating “mirror” of pre-and post-revolutionary France.
A panel of three speakers, pictured above, addressed the question with presentations on the historical background, the living conditions, diseases and treatments that prevailed among the crews and commanders of the ships that made these lonely and very dangerous voyages and then the story of a pioneering Western Australian pharmacist Alex Trouchet, as told by his grandson, made for an interesting and lively discussion.
This session was well attended despite running concurrently with a popular counseling competition for young pharmacists.
The pharmacy history session was proudly sponsored once again by the Australian Friendly Societies Pharmacies Association.
