Pharmacy in Casino (Fig.1 p19), this is a picture of a classical dispensary at the turn of the 20th century.
The first pharmacy in Casino was opened by CP Godfrey before 1900 and after a succession of owners it was bought by Queenslander Frank Johnson in 1919.
Frank Johnson had studied pharmacy at Sydney University, as there was no pharmacy school in Queensland at the time. After qualifying he managed a pharmacy in Sydney until the end of 1918, and then he decided to find a business for himself as by then he was a married man.
With the purchase of the pharmacy came a dispensary assistant, Jim Scott, who had started as a 14-year-old in the pharmacy and worked full time until he retired in 1975 at the age of 77 years. It was not uncommon for unregistered male assistants to be employed as dispensers in those days.
In 1940 Charles Johnson joined his father in the business after graduating as a pharmacist from Sydney University. Charles worked with his father until 1964 when Frank retired due to ill health. The third generation Phillip Johnson, who was Charles’ son, had just been registered as a pharmacist when Frank died.
Phillip and his father formed a partnership and remodelled the pharmacy extensively as the business prospered. Unfortunately Charles was unable to enjoy the new surroundings as he died in 1976 and Phillip became the sole proprietor. By this time there five pharmacies in Casino, but the Johnson family was very innovative and their business remained strong and vibrant. Each generation has given a full commitment professionally to the community they have served for nearly 90 years. Phillip has two sons, but there is no indication as yet that there will be a fourth generation of pharmacists. Time will tell!
