FIRE – The dread of every small business
This rather sad photo was taken in 1899 in Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.
Its caption “Another View after the Fire”, says it all, and this would have been the scene of devastation that greeted the Pharmacist and the Dentist, as well as their employees, in the cold hard light of day.
Mr.W.J.Cotter, who owned the pharmacy, was registered in Western Australia in 1804. He went to the goldfields at the height of the gold rush, when Kalgoorlie and its twin city Boulder, rivalled the state capital Perth in population and amenities such as hotels and pharmacies.
After the fire, which started in the Australia Hotel next to the pharmacy, Mr.Cotter was fortunately able to resume business rather quickly in new premises further along Hannan Street.
In 1910, one of the famous names of West Australian Pharmacy, Alex Trouchet, took over the practice and soon established his range of household remedies that rivalled those of Holloway or Beecham in popularity.
In more recent years, the shop in the picture again became a pharmacy, operated by Mr.W.Hicks. The old facade was restored, but the fancy pedestals somehow had disappeared.
