McMullan’s Pharmacy, Atherton North Queensland c1925
M ost pictures of pharmacy shopfronts before WWII invariably have the proprietor or other male staff included in the picture.
Was it an ego thing?
Females, if employed, usually worked as packers or at some other ‘behind the scenes’ task.
Males were the shop assistants and were paid higher wages than any of the female staff.
One of the pioneers of promoting an appeal to female customers was a Perth pharmacist, Alex Trouchet, who established a branch pharmacy close by his main pharmacy, which was managed by a woman pharmacist, trained female assistants to specialise in advice and products in a more conducive environment for lady customers. This picture shows the proprietor, Mr McMullan and his apprentice George McBride beaming with pride for the photographer.
