Town and country Trouchet Broome, WA c1920
In its hey day Broome was a cosmopolitan town bustling with master pearlers and the multi racial crews, mainly Chinese and Japanese as well as Pacific Islanders, that came to Broome seeking their fortunes.
They had to endured the dangers of the
deep to capture pearl shell that and the
precious globes within that were worth a fortune on the world markets.
As he had done in the goldfields, Alex Trouchet could see that servicing the health needs of these hard working communities was much more profitable to him than searching for gold or the elusive pearls.
Perth, WA c1917
When Alex Trouchet left Kalgoorlie
to challenge the Perth metropolitan chemists with his marketing and promotional skills, he purchased the well established pharmacy of Stewart and Freeman, which was on the corner of Barrack Street and Wellington Street in Perth city.
He became quite famous for his range of household remedies that were sent all over the state and interstate as well.
It was not long before he opened a specialty pharmacy a few doors from his main shop, which was staffed by women, including a woman pharmacist, to cater for the needs of his female customers. This led to a series of other shops around Perth and it suburbs, there being no legislation controlling the number of pharmacies that one person could own.
The final salvo
