The old order closeth!
The long established Jacobsons Pharmacy in Claremont, Western Australia, has shut its doors for the last time.
Built in 1923 as a shop and residence for Alfred.Golder, who was persuaded to leave the country town of Greenbushes to become the ‘lodge dispenser’ for the western suburbs of Perth.
During World War II, the pharmacy was operated by Lyla Golder, Alfred’s daughter and in 1943 the pharmacy was sold to Edith Jacobson, who became the first woman to be a pharmacy proprietor in Western Australia.
In 1960 Edith Jacobson formed a partnership with Geoff Miller and this very successful relationship persisted until Edith retired finally in the mid 1980s. After two refits and then a major expansion of the total shop area, Geoff finally retired and sold the business to Brian Lewis in 1988.
Then followed a succession of owners until finally the opposition Friendlies pharmacy purchased the business and in October 2008 the doors were finally closed after 90 years of community service in the best traditions of the profession.
