WA goldfields pharmacy
cTaptures the past
his Pharmacy in Boulder City, which is part of the Kalgoorlie Golden
Mile, was commenced on its present site in 1902 by Harrie Saxon Lee, the son of an immigrant clergyman living in Hamilton , Victoria.
Lee had completed an
apprenticeship to a pharmaceutical
chemist and concluded his studies
at the Ballarat School of Mines,
which awarded him his certificate
and diploma in Pharmacy,
After a time working as a relieving pharmacist in Melbourne, he moved to Kalgoorlie to manage a pharmacy at the height of the Western Australian gold rush.
Because he had not passed the pharmacy entrance examination he could not be registered in WA, but eventually he completed a modified examination to satisfy the Pharmaceutical Council and was registered. His son Norman qualified as
a pharmacist in 1921 and took over the Boulder business from his father, who moved to Perth and opened a small pharmacy in Barrack Street.
Today the Boulder Pharmacy is still operating and its current owner is John Rees, who took over in 1972.
With the resurgence in gold mining the area is booming again and John Rees
has enlarged the premises by combining two shops to enable him to conduct the pharmacy and establish a Pharmacy Museum which is now part of the tourist trail in Boulder city.
The fixtures in the Museum are from the early pharmacy and they are loaded
with many collections of prescription and proprietary medicines, infantalia, photographic artefacts, medical instruments and cosmetics and perfumery etc. The Pharmacy and Museum successfully reflect the life and times of a very historic part of WA and full marks must go to John Rees for his enterprise.
