Codeine rescheduling: Transforming your business

The PSA and the Guild have developed a suite of online modules to assist you and your team to prepare for the rescheduling of combination codeine containing medicines on 1 February 2018. This module examines the business impacts of the decision to reschedule combination medicines containing codeine, and discusses the actions that pharmacists in the community pharmacy setting should take to prepare for the change and mitigate impacts on the business.

This activity has been accredited for 1.5 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 1.5 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan, which can be converted to 1.5 hours of Group 2 CPD (or 3 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities.

  • Learning objectives
    After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:
    • Measure the business impact as a result of the scheduling change
    • Identify actions your pharmacy can take to reduce the impact from the expected reduction in low-dose codeine sales
    • Develop a business action plan to prepare your pharmacy for the scheduling change
    • Plan stock management of combination medicines containing codeine, prescription pain relief medicines, and other products during and following the scheduling transition period
    • Use pharmacy documentation and software to record consultations with patients and to communicate effectively with other health professionals
    • Market and promote your pharmacy’s pain relief solutions to patients and potential patients in your local area
    • Identify the staff training required to ensure your pharmacy is well prepared for the codeine scheduling change.
