UTI resources – WA

On 4 August 2023, the WA Government announced its commitment to authorise Registered Pharmacists working in community pharmacy to supply antibiotics for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) for female patients aged between 18 and 65 years.

Pharmacists who meet the conditions and approved training requirements as outlined in the Pharmacist Initiated Treatment of Urinary Tract Infection SASA will be authorised to supply approved oral antibiotics from the 4th of August 2023. The Pharmacist Initiated Treatment of Urinary Tract Infection SASA  details the type of antibiotics that can be supplied as well as the permitted quantity of supply.

It is important to note that WA’s treatment recommendations for the management of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTI) align with local resistance patterns in Western Australia. WA’s unique treatment recommendations for the management of uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) are explained in WA Supplementary Information for Pharmacists.

As outlined in SASA and Supplementary information, the first-line antibiotic treatment option is nitrofurantoin and the second-line antibiotic treatment option is trimethoprim. Cefalexin has been EXCLUDED from the WA Pharmacist Initiated Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections Program.

Pharmacists must familiarise themselves with and adhere to WA’s Pharmacist Initiated Treatment of Urinary Tract Infection SASA and WA Supplementary Information for Pharmacists .
