Hugh and Mary Darragh Postgraduate Scholarship

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) Foundation is pleased to share an update on the Hugh and Mary Darragh Postgraduate Scholarship following the recent close of Expressions of Interest.

The scholarship received strong interest from pharmacists across Australia, reflecting the profession’s commitment to improving disease‑state management and improving patient care. The successful recipient will be formally announced on 27 March 2026.

The Hugh and Mary Darragh Postgraduate Scholarship is a national initiative designed to support pharmacists undertaking postgraduate study. The scholarship provides up to $10,000 to assist the successful applicant in pursuing further clinical education, enabling them to contribute to measurable improvements in medicines safety, patient outcomes, and evidence‑based collaborative practice.

Eligibility criteria for this year’s round included:

  • Holding a pharmacy degree from a recognised tertiary institution
  • Undertaking postgraduate study in pharmacy or medicine (e.g. prescribing, clinical specialisation)
  • Identifying a specific disease‑state focus area such as palliative care, cardiovascular health, sleep apnoea, respiratory disease, or another defined condition
  • Demonstrating how the study will improve medicines safety, clinical outcomes, or system‑level innovation in disease‑state management.

Applicants submitted a 500‑word expression of interest outlining:
  • Confirmation of eligibility and postgraduate enrolment (current or intended)
  • Details of their study area, including estimated costs
  • Description of the disease‑state or clinical focus
  • Explanation of how their study aligns with the purpose of the Hugh and Mary Darragh bequest and the PSA Foundation’s mission to advance health outcomes.

The PSA Foundation thanks all applicants for their high‑quality submissions. We look forward to announcing the scholarship winner on 27 March 2026

Contribution from the Pharmaceutical Society of Queensland

PSA proudly acknowledges the generous contribution from the Pharmaceutical Society of Queensland (a historical society) and the Queensland Pharmacy Research Trust. This donation marks the beginning of several initiatives that will advance the PSA Foundation’s mission to improve public health through innovative pharmacy practice.

Guided by modern governance practices and a strong investment policy, the establishment of the Foundation allows us to unlock funds from historical trusts and expand them further. This ensures ongoing support for members of the profession, especially during critical periods of practice change, like today.

Associate Professor Fei Sim FPS, Chair of the PSA Foundation Board, highlighted the impact of this donation:

“This generous contribution from the Pharmaceutical Society of Queensland and Queensland Pharmacy Research Trust is an exciting start for the PSA Foundation. With their support, we can enable more pharmacists to expand their practice and deliver better health outcomes for all Australians.”
