Pharmacists in 2023 was pivotal for Australian pharmacists and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA). For the first time, a clear vision and framework was developed which, if achieved, would unlock opportunities for pharmacists to fulfil their full potential in supporting the health and wellbeing of Australians.

Much of this vision has been realised.

Actions and Enablers for Change

Actions

Pharmacists in 2030 identifies the following actions as the key to achieving our vision of pharmacists reaching their full potential in supporting the health and wellbeing of Australians.

1. Medicine safety

Empower and support pharmacists to reduce risks and minimise harm by advancing medicine safety in practice

2. Medicines stewardship

Support pharmacists to actively lead and influence effective and judicious medicine

3. Access to care

Provide all consumers greater access to care by increasing and leveraging the accessibility of pharmacists to address unmet health needs

4. Equity

Support pharmacists to meet the unique needs of vulnerable individuals and priority populations to address the disparity of health status through the provision of appropriate and responsive care

5. Workforce development

Equip and grow the pharmacist workforce to address existing and emerging health challenges

6. Sustainability

Drive practice changes which increase the sustainability of the pharmacist workforce, increase social contribution and limit environmental impact

These actions will largely be realised in practice changes affecting pharmacists in direct patient-care roles, enabled by pharmacists practising in non-patient facing roles, including academia, management and leadership.

Enablers

To achieve these actions, our vision also identifies five enablers which are critical to successful achievement of each individual action.
