On 1 February 2014, alprazolam changed from Schedule 4 drug to Controlled Drug (Schedule 8). PSA has produced an information fact sheet to assist residential aged care facilities.
The decision to change the schedule of alprazolam was made by the Department of Health on advice from the Advisory Committee on Medicines Scheduling, expert evidence, and public consultation submissions.
To assist residential aged care facilities, PSA has worked in partnership with Leading Age Services Australia to produce an information fact sheet . The document provides a summary of clinical information on alprazolam and reasons behind the rescheduling decision.
It also includes a checklist of issues that should be considered by RACF staff and a list of example resources.
