National Pharmacy Workforce Analysis

Your opportunity to shape the future of our profession

The PSA, in partnership with The University of Queensland (UQ), is leading the National Pharmacy Workforce Analysis. This project is developing Australia’s first comprehensive, needs-based pharmacy workforce model, shifting our planning focus from service supply to patient need.

Why this project matters: addressing key trends

Our profession is experiencing significant trends that are transforming healthcare. This analysis addresses the following key areas to prepare for the future:

  • Expanded scope of practice: As pharmacists assume roles in mental health first aid, UTI management, and oral contraceptive supply, we must balance expanded services with traditional dispensing responsibilities.
  • A profession-wide response to pressure: Growing clinical responsibilities raise important questions about safety, quality, and workforce capacity.
  • Priority population needs: Demand is increasing for pharmacist intervention in complex areas such as dementia, disability, alcohol and drug services (including methadone and buprenorphine), and support for people experiencing homelessness.
  • GP Pharmacist and Aged Care On-site Pharmacist surge: As GPs and aged care facilities seek to include pharmacists in their teams, clear and funded pathways are needed to place pharmacists where they are most needed.

This initiative is commissioned and funded by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing as part of the Strategic Agreement on Pharmacist Professional Practice.

Our Progress: Moving into Phase 2

In March 2026, we completed Phase 1, which included systems-thinking workshops in Brisbane and Melbourne to identify factors shaping current practice.

Building on insights from Phase 1, we are entering Phase 2. This phase will include targeted focus groups that will examine workforce needs across key areas to ensure equitable access across Australia.

Have your say: contribute to the national survey

This is not solely a PSA initiative; it is a plan for the entire profession. Your participation in the below survey is essential to ensure the workforce model reflects real-world experiences and meets the needs of all pharmacy professionals. We are seeking input from:

  • Pharmacy students and interns.
  • Early career pharmacists.
  • Registered pharmacists across all practice settings, from community and hospital to innovative, emerging roles.

Your frontline experience, shared through this survey, will directly inform recommendations that shape future policies and support for the profession.
