Codeine rescheduling: Communication in pain management

The PSA and the Guild have developed a suite of online modules to assist you and your team to prepare for the rescheduling of combination codeine containing medicines on 1 February 2018. This module provides strategies to communicate effectively with patients about requests for codeine-containing analgesics, codeine misuse and management of pain and encourages collaboration with other health professionals to support and manage the patient with pain.
CPD credits

Accreditation number: CONL1726

This activity has been accredited for 1.5 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 1.5 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan, which can be converted to 1.5 hours of Group 2 CPD (or 3 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities.

  • Learning objectives
    After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:
    • Respond effectively to requests for codeine-containing analgesics and/or pain management advice
    • Describe the stages of change model and recognise its role when consulting with patients who require pain management
    • Explain the principles of motivational interviewing, and use this approach to help patients manage their pain
    • Discuss misuse of medicines containing codeine that contain codeine, and describe approaches for management or referral of people who are using the medicines inappropriately
    • Collaborate and communicate with other health professionals to support the patient with pain.
